Alone for the holidays?
Being single and alone for the holidays is really difficult for a lot of people. Some of them tell me that they feel “broken” because they aren’t partnered when everyone else around is. The truth is that not all people are in a partnership or marriage. This is a myth that we keep repeating to ourselves until we believe it as fact.
These holidays are just another day of the year until you put value and emphasis on that particular day. When I was a kid there was the old joke the teachers told us nearly every year, “Do they have 4th of July in England?” We all quickly said, “Nooooo.” Well of course they do, it comes after the 3rd and before the 5th of July. It’s not a holiday for them and they don’t get one bit upset that they’re alone on that day.
Thinking again about all those people who are in relationships and you’re not — how many of them are truly happier than you are? Would you want to be a part of some of those partnerships from hell? I doubt it. Your life might not be perfect but it’s not more or less satisfying just because you’re single.
I want to leave you with this thought. The holiday is just one day. Your singleness is temporary. The weather is temporary. Everything is temporary. So treat yourself to something decadent, read a book, watch a movie, volunteer at a food kitchen or decide to catch up on some much needed sleep.
